Helen Corke papers, 1912-1975.

The correspondence series consists of 727 autograph, typescript, and carbon copy typescript letters primarily between Corker and her friends, colleagues, and publishers. Included in this series are photocopies of transcriptions of letters from D.H. Lawrence to Corke. The correspondence dates from 1912 to 1976 and is arranged alphabetically by surname of correspondent. The literary writings section consists of autograph and typescript drafts of Corke's autobiography (In our Infancy), short stories, poems and plays. Included in this series are Corke's writings pertaining to the works of D.H. Lawrence and to her relationship with him. The literary writings date from 1913 to 1968 and are arranged alphabetically by title. The history and economics writings section consists of autograph and typescript drafts of various history and economic courses and a number of proposed lectures for young people and teachers; materials relating to the publication of a series of textbooks; articles and commentaries on economic and political issues; historical plays; and biographical pieces about noted historical figures. The historical and economic writings date from 1927 to 1936 and are arranged alphabetically by title. There are 28 manuscript notebooks containing autograph drafts and draft fragments of Corke's writings (identified and unidentified), research notes, and drafts of of letters to various individuals. There are also 45 pocket appointment diaries, a few of which contain autograph draft fragments of writings and travel notes. The photographs included in the collection are a 1912 portrait of Corke, a snapshot of Corke's cabin at the Lawrence ranch, snapshots of the Lawrence Festival 1970 and other photographs primarily relating to D.H. Lawrence. The miscellaneous material includes items such as Corke's drivers license, receipts, War Stock certificate, theatre and recital programmes.

David Herbert Richards Lawrence was born September 11, 1885, in Eastwood, near Nottingham, to Arthur Lawrence, a coal miner, and Lydia Beardsall. He attended Nottingham University College, and in 1908 he took a teaching position at Davidson Road School in Croydon.
